Just what is Pilates?
At the turn of the century, Joseph H. Pilates developed this method of exercise and movement with the intention to eliminate physical limitations. He was a pioneer in the study of physical education and dedicated his life to teaching his method. "The Art of Contrology", as it was originally called, is a method of exercise whose purpose is to attain and maintain a uniformly developed body. Its movements are derived from Eastern and Western philosophies, and combine key elements of yoga, physical therapy and intentional breathing. This requires the re-patterning of muscles and skeletal development as a result of habits, occupation, injuries, hobbies/sports, and lifestyle. As you begin Pilates training, you will see results in improved posture, energy, strength, flexibility, and often relief of pain.

Steffi Freedman, Certified Pilates Instructor & Owner
My interest in Pilates started when I was a kid. Early days of tutus and tap shoes introduced me to movement, and it was the beginning of a lifelong passion. I have over ten years of professional experience in the fitness field, during which time I’ve worked at Penn State, in New York City, and Philadelphia. In 2003 I began formally studying Pilates at a Pilates and More on the Main Line. Upon completion of its Comprehensive Instructor Training Program, I taught private and group sessions there as well as at the University of Pennsylvania on all of the apparatus as well as the mat. I am recognized as a certified instructor through the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) and a contributor to www.HealthandWellnessExpert.com.
